Discord Unveils Games Platform and Nitro Updates
So many of us always (always) have a tab open to Discord. It’s not only a place to flex your GIF skills, it’s also the hub of our communities – a unifying place for connecting with friends, fans, supporters, and peers. At this point, it’s hard to remember what life was like without Discord…never leave us, majestic Wumpus.
As if we needed more reasons to love Discord, they recently made some big moves that deliver more value and also give us an idea of what’s in store for the platform. The biggest news is the addition of the new Discord Store Global Beta:
With the Discord Store, you can now purchase and play games right within the Discord app. The selection of games is curated with the intention to have all titles in the store being worthwhile ‘good’ games. The verdict is still out, but we love the idea!
Beyond the general games store, Discord has begun a program called ‘First on Discord’ where select games have a PC-exclusive launch on Discord (typically for 90 days). First on Discord titles currently include:
- Last Year: The Nightmare
- Sinner ‘Sacrifice for Redemption’
- King of the Hat
- At Sundown
- Mad Machines
- Mad North
- Minion Masters
Discord has also given a boost to their subscription service, now including over 60 games with your Discord Nitro subscription, which runs $9.99 a month. Users can also choose to subscribe without the games option with Nitro Classic for half the price – still giving you those chat perks, custom tag number, and custom emojis anywhere (among other benefits).
For content creators, this is all great news. The stronger Discord is as a platform the more opportunities we have to connect and build relationships. Discord’s collection of games also gives creators more options when looking for something to play, and the fact that they are easily accessible means we have even more games that members of our communities can jump in and experience alongside us.
